Life lesson #135: sometimes, even when the recipe is from Bon Apetit, and even when you think you know what the heck you're doing, all you end up with is cake mush.

In Which I Attempt Cake
And spectacularly fail.
Life lesson #135: sometimes, even when the recipe is from Bon Apetit, and even when you think you know what the heck you're doing, all you end up with is cake mush.
The cake wasn't strong enough to hold the weight of whatever it was I was supposed to do... and so it all kind of fell apart. Thankfully, there was time for Plan B -- which was a box cake (shameful!) and some leftover white chocolate/peppermint whipped cream filling. That, at least, turned out.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes: aside from the cake fail, I had a great day!

LOL! I love it! It still looks really really yummy. You did eat it, right?
I agree with Suey.
I have a suspicion that the cake mush still tasted pretty good. I'm with Suey and Amanda!

Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. I'd come over and eat that cake wreck ANY TIME. They both look delicious :)
White chocolate/peppermint frosting sounds awesome!
Happy Belated Birthday to you!
Oh that is great! I'd still eat it. Chocolate and peppermint...mmmm.
Actually, I looked at the wreck, tasted it a bit (it was pretty good) and -- horror! -- threw it in the trash. (M came home and was SHOCKED that I'd do such a thing...) The second cake was good, though.
It takes a LOT to render me speechless, but I gasped aloud when I read that you threw away that delicious, if not visually appealing, cake. Shame on you. There are moms in this world just starving for cake, didn't you know??
:)
Glad to know that second one fit the bill!
Box cakes are NOT shameful! My sister the pastry chef uses them all the time. And seriously, sometimes I can make an awesome cake, sometimes not. Hit and miss I say!
But WHY did you make your own cake? (Although, I guess once I bought my own cake from Costco then took it to all my siblings houses to eat a slice with each of them. Sometimes we've got to do what we've got to do.)
I'm as shocked as M! I'd have gobbled down the bits of broken cake. I'm sure they were still awfully tasty. :)
Looks like something that would happen to me.
Ah, Cami, I made my own cake because I haven't found a place to buy it that makes it the way I like it. And I know I do. :-)
The rest of you: next time I make a supreme cake fail, I'll call and y'all can come eat it for me!
I am all about making what you like....just make sure to lick the bowl! Hope your birthday was happy!
I would've eaten it too...it's making my mouth water!
I dunno, I think both cakes look pretty good, and the more important issue is taste - there's no way I would have been able to resist it, even if it wasn't as presentable as the boxed one!
Oh my, SOMETHING went wrong but it doesn't seem to make it look less yummy! I am glad you had a great day anyway: happy birthday!!!
Happy Birthday, Melissa. Sorry I'm late, but the wishes are sincere. Hope you had a lovely day.
Mmmmmmm! Cake mush is still tasty. This valuable lesson I learned after an especially heartbreaking strawberry shortcake incident. :D Happy belated birthday, Melissa!
